Virginia Tech star guard Georgia Amoore has entered the transfer portal, a source with access to the transfer portal confirmed Monday. Amoore has marked “do not contact,” meaning that she does not want coaches to reach out to her. That implies that Amoore likely already knows where she wants to go or has a few finalists. Amoore’s decision comes on the heels of former Hokies women’s basketball coach Kenny Brooks leaving to accept the head coaching job at Kentucky.

Amoore started 124 of 126 games over her four-year tenure at Virginia Tech. She averaged 18.8 points, 6.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 0.9 steals on 41.2 percent shooting this season, leading the Hokies in assists and steals. Her points, assists and field goal percentage were all career highs.

Amoore has career averages of 14.7 points, 5.2 assists and 2.6 rebounds.

The Victoria, Australia native had a storied career at Virginia Tech, initially being named to the ACC All-Freshman team after the 2020-21 season. She continued to stack accolades from there. Some of which include being named an AP All-American, two-time All-ACC, two-time All-ACC tournament and the ACC tournament MVP in 2023.

The Hokies lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Baylor this season.

What this means for Virginia Tech

The hits continue for Virginia Tech. After their bid for a Final Four came to an untimely end due to Elizabeth Kitley’s ACL injury, the Hokies lost coach Brooks to Kentucky. With Amoore transferring and Cayla King graduating, Virginia Tech has lost the entirety of the core who made the national semifinals in 2023.

Is Amoore following Brooks to Kentucky?

Amoore would have been a first-round pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft but had an additional year of eligibility due to the one-time Covid-19 exception. She doesn’t have anything left to prove at the collegiate level.

However, by presumably joining Brooks, she will help the new head coach install his system at Kentucky. Brooks runs a unique offense that relies heavily on his point guard to direct actions, and the adjustment process at a new school will be helped tremendously by having Amoore around.

Amoore would be an asset to any program looking for a lead guard thanks to her elite playmaking and shot creation; with the Wildcats, she’ll essentially be the coach on the floor thanks to her knowledge of the system. — Merchant

How this affects Amoore’s 2025 draft stock

The 2025 WNBA Draft should be a little deeper than the 2024 iteration as the Covid-19 year exemption expires, so Amoore is tempting the fates with her draft stock. There is also the possibility that Amoore isn’t as impressive without her security blanket Kitley in a more physical conference.

However, if she plays well in the SEC, Amoore will answer a lot of questions about her ability to hold up against WNBA defenses. — Merchant
