A documentary following the final days of Roger Federer’s legendary tennis career is set to be released.
Helmed by Academy Award-winning director Asif Kapadia and co-director Joe Sabia, the film — which will be shown exclusively by Prime Video — promises to be “an intimate follow-along” of the end of the 20-time Grand Slam winner’s run in the sport that he dominated for 20 years.
Originally a home video never intended for public viewing, the film captures Federer “at his most vulnerable and candid self”, the release says.
Federer won a record eight Wimbledon titles as well as six Australian Opens, five U.S. Opens and a single French Open.
In the men’s game his tally of 20 sits third all-time behind only long-time rivals Rafael Nadal (22) and Novak Djokovic (24).
He was also world No 1 for a record 237 consecutive weeks and won the year-ending Tour finals on six occasions.
Nadal and Djokovic will feature heavily in the documentary, as will Andy Murray, that boasts “unprecedented access to the relationship between these unparalleled stars”.
“Initially, the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could have it later on to show my family and friends,” said Federer.
“During my career, I tended to shy away from having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments. But I didn’t see the harm in shooting this as it was never intended for the public.
“However, we captured so many powerful moments, and it transformed into a deeply personal journey.”
