Manchester United and Getafe have begun talks regarding the possibility of a new loan deal for Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood joined Getafe on a season-long loan on the final day of last summer’s transfer window and the La Liga club are keen to extend the 22-year-old’s stay.

The forward has made 32 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists.

Getafe — who negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on fee as part of their original deal with United — are pleased with Greenwood’s impact since arriving in Spain, but senior sources at the club indicate they are unlikely to consider signing the striker on a permanent basis. The Spanish side also expect Greenwood will be looking to play Champions League football next season.

United would prefer to secure a permanent move for the academy graduate — whose form has attracted the attention of other La Liga clubs — but a loan offer would also be considered if an acceptable fee is not received.

His current United contract expires in June 2025 and includes a one-year extension option that can be activated should the club decide to do so.

Another loan move for the 22-year-old would make it more likely that United would opt to trigger an additional year rather than risk losing him on a free at the end of his current deal.

The possibility of Greenwood being reintegrated into United’s first-team squad this summer is also not being ruled out.

Manchester United declined to comment when contacted by The Athletic.

United had initially planned to try and reintegrate the forward after charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour — all of which he denied — were discontinued, only to change their stance following a backlash.

Faced with criticism and internal opposition, they reversed their decision and subsequently announced his departure.

The expectation was he would not play for his boyhood club again, having not made an appearance since a match against West Ham in January 2022, with then-CEO Richard Arnold again reiterating this to staff in an all-hands meeting in September.

However Manchester United’s football leadership team has being overhauled in recent months under the guidance of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Director of football John Murtough stepped down with immediate effect in April, while interim chief executive officer (CEO) Patrick Stewart and chief financial officer Cliff Baty will both step down at the end of the season.

In February, in his first public appearance since confirming his minority ownership stake in the club, Ratcliffe was questioned about Greenwood’s future at Old Trafford.

“He’s a Manchester United footballer so we are in charge of football,” Ratcliffe said. “So the answer is yes, we have to make decisions. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made.

“He’s on loan obviously but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on so we will do that.

“The process will be: understand the facts, not the hype and then try and come to a fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it.”
