Mason Mount has suffered a fresh injury setback and will miss Sunday’s Premier League match against Arsenal, but captain Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay have returned to training.

Mount, who joined United from Chelsea in a deal worth £60million ($76.7m) last summer, has suffered from injury problems all season.

The 25-year-old has started just five Premier League matches this season, with Monday night’s four-goal defeat at Crystal Palace his first league start since October — where he replaced Fernandes in United’s midfield.

“Mason Mount unfortunately fell out yesterday, so he is out for Sunday,” Ten Hag said on Friday.

Mount, Manchester United and a move that has not worked out… yet

The United manager did provide a more positive fitness update with some of Mount’s team-mates returning to training: “There were some players back on the pitch today — Bruno and Scott McTominay.

“Licha (Lisandro Martinez) came to me to say he wants to play against Arsenal but he’s not ready yet. He needs a little bit more time to go through the process, but he’s so desperate to play. Raphael Varane, too. Luke Shaw has a setback in his process but there’s still hope and he will fight.”

Ten Hag added: “Martinez wants to play but he’s had three injuries across the season and now he’s almost there, injury-free, but now he has to get back into training.

“I will never gamble with a player. It’s about their futures and careers — that’s the most important thing. And also the club.

“Rashy (Rashford) trained this morning as well and we’ll have to see how he recovers from this. But it looks quite good.”

Ten Hag: We have ‘an idea’ about cause of injury crisis

Ten Hag was also asked if Mount’s latest injury setback summed up the season for both the player and the club, who have continually been dealt injury blows throughout the campaign.

“Yes, very unlucky, and, as you say, a symbol for the season,” Ten Hag said.

“We’ve had so many injuries it’s difficult for all of us, the whole club, and the fans. But they show unity and when things go bad you have to stick together.

“And we can still play for something really high with the FA Cup Final, of course. And we’ll keep fighting in every game to also get up the ranking and into Europe.”

United host Arsenal on Sunday before concluding their Premier League campaign with a home match against Newcastle on May 15 before a trip to Brighton on May 19.

For the second successive season, United will play Manchester City in the FA Cup final — which will take place at Wembley on May 25.
