Change is a coming to Washington D.C.—we all know it, we all feel it, and for many of us conservatives, we’re looking forward to it. Things can’t continue to go the way they have under the pernicious Biden-Harris regime; our country won’t survive.

But with change comes uncertainty, and with incoming President-elect Donald Trump comes surprises. Buying Greenland? Re-acquiring the Panama Canal? DOGE? I admit it, I didn’t necessarily have those on my Bingo card.

On Tuesday, Trump unveiled his latest idea—the External Revenue Service (ERS). The soon-to-be president posted his proposition to Truth Social:

The post continues:

I am today announcing that I will create the EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE to collect our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources. We will begin charging those that make money off of us with Trade, and they will start paying, FINALLY, their fair share. January 20, 2025, will be the birth date of the External Revenue Service. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Trump said he planned to get the new entity going right away:

The incoming president added that the ERS would be established on Jan. 20 to “begin charging those that make money off of us with Trade, and they will start paying, FINALY, their fair share.”

Trump, 78, has already threatened to raise tariffs on foreign countries that do not comply with his hard-line immigration policies. The president-elect has singled out Mexico and Canada with a threat of a 25% tariff, and has also said he will stop “business” with countries who refuse to take back illegal migrants who have been deported.

The Republican has also said he will levy a 10% to 20% tariff on all foreign goods and up to a 60% tariff on Chinese imports.

Can he simply create a new agency unilaterally? According to one analysis, “The creation of a separate ERS department will in theory need congressional support, though Trump could try to establish the department within a different existing agency.”

Many conservatives on social media were pumped by the announcement. Former sportscaster and current conservative pundit Jason Whitlock:

“We will finally have a government agency that actually helps Americans instead of bleeding them dry with taxes and regulations,” said DC_Draino.

Meanwhile, economist EJ Antoni of the Heritage Foundation “told The [NY] Post that ‘I really, really love this idea.’”

We’ll just have to see how this one plays out and whether the idea comes to fruition, but one thing is for sure—Donald Trump is bringing new ideas and a new way of doing business to the Swamp of Washington, D.C. We’ll all have to be on our toes.
