Fantasy Premier League: Gameweek 25 review – Jota injury woe and time to buy Hojlund?

[ad_1]

It hasn’t been a positive start to Double Gameweek 25 for a lot of Fantasy Premier League managers, with injuries to key players and blanks for popular assets such as Erling Haaland (£14.4m), Kevin De Bruyne (£10.8m) and Phil Foden (£8.1m) in the first of their two games.

We still have three games to go this week. Everton play Crystal Palace tonight (Monday) and Manchester City and Liverpool welcome Brentford and Luton on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

There were a lot of relevant events that occurred over the weekend, so here are the main talking points from an FPL viewpoint.

Liverpool injury woes impact key assets

The big news from the weekend was the injuries to Diogo Jota (£8.3m) and Darwin Nunez (£7.6m). Jota was taken off on a stretcher, so I think it’s safe to say he won’t make the second fixture of his double gameweek against Luton and looks to be out of action for a while.

Nunez’s injury doesn’t seem as serious, however. Jurgen Klopp said post-game: “Darwin, we took off because he said he feels something a little. Today that was enough to immediately push the brake and that’s what we did.’’

It is likely, though, that Wednesday’s Luton game will come too soon for the Uruguayan. With the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea next weekend, it adds more weight to him missing out against Rob Edwards’ side.

Curtis Jones (£4.9m) was also a casualty and had to be replaced before half-time. He is only owned by 0.2 per cent of FPL managers overall, so it won’t have as big an impact as Jota and Nunez’s expected absences.

There is no doubt that both Jota and Nunez are a “sell now”. Liverpool have a blank in Gameweek 26 and are extremely likely to blank in Gameweek 29, too.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) replaced Jota after 44 minutes and he didn’t take long to get back to scoring ways. He scored one goal and got an assist in 46 minutes. However, I wouldn’t look to buy the Egyptian until Gameweek 30.

Liverpool play Nottingham Forest (A) and Manchester City (H) after their blank in Gameweek 26. They are also strong favourites to progress in the FA Cup fifth round, which means they would not have a fixture in Blank Gameweek 29.

Newcastle’s defensive decline continues

Newcastle United’s defence has been one of the worst in the league lately.

Since Gameweek 18, they have conceded the second-most goals (20) in the league and have the worst xGC (expected goals conceded; 22.60).

If you own their defenders, it’s probably the right time to get rid of them soon. They play Arsenal (A), Wolves (H), and Chelsea (A) next.

Going forward, they haven’t been so bad and Anthony Gordon (£6.1m) continues to provide value. He now has eight goals and eight assists and looks to be Newcastle’s penalty taker with Callum Wilson (£7.8m) and Alexander Isak (£7.5m) out injured.

It looks as though Gordon will continue to play as the No 9 as long as Newcastle’s two forwards remain out, so if you still own the ex-Everton man, then he is an easy hold for now.

Tottenham assets – keep or sell?

Spurs suffered a surprise defeat at home to Wolves and it was Richarlison’s (£7.1m) second blank in a row.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are one of the four teams who do not have a fixture next gameweek, so we should rightfully consider whether we should sell their assets.

However, I think Richarlison should be kept. The Brazilian is still playing up top and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Additionally, Tottenham’s fixtures from Gameweek 27 onwards are great and they are also guaranteed to play in Blank Gameweek 29.

The likes of Son Heung-min (£9.6m) and James Maddison (£8.0m) are going to be popular buys due to this. They play Crystal Palace (H), Aston Villa (A), Fulham (A), Luton (H), West Ham (A) and Nottingham Forest (H) from Gameweek 27.

Pedro Porro (£5.7m) and Destiny Udogie (£4.9m) missed the match on Saturday due to injury. Speaking before his team’s 2-1 loss to Wolves on Saturday, Tottenham manager Postecoglou said: “Destiny picked up a knock last week and he’s not available for tomorrow. I don’t think it’s anything too serious.

“Pedro picked up a strain in training; probably a couple of weeks for him. With a game break, hopefully he doesn’t miss too many.’’

Unless you are struggling to put out a full team, I would hold Porro and Udogie as they could well be back for Gameweek 27.

Are Hojlund and Garnacho worth investing in?

Manchester United have won their lost four games and are unbeaten in the last five. In that period, they have scored 13 goals (fourth) with an xG of 9.45 (fifth).

Rasmus Hojlund (£7.2m) has netted six goals and created two assists in his last five matches and seems to have finally bedded into the Premier League.

At his price, the United striker looks solid value and with Fulham (H), Manchester City (A) and Everton (H) next, his team’s fixtures are decent too. If United lose to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup fifth round on February 26, their fixture against Sheffield United (H) will also go ahead.

The FA Cup fifth round will be played in the midweek before Gameweek 27. Therefore, we will know the exact fixtures for Blank Gameweek 29 before the Gameweek 27 deadline.

Although it might be tempting to buy Hojlund for the plum game against Fulham, it might be wiser to wait until they play Manchester City and see if they have a fixture in Gameweek 29.

The same goes for Alejandro Garnacho (£5.0m), who has five goals and three assists this season. He is the best United midfielder to own right now.

Hold your transfers

There is still plenty of time left in this gameweek. This isn’t the week to be making early transfers, especially with Liverpool and Manchester City in action later in the week.

We should get a fair bit of information regarding injuries before the week is through and Pep Guardiola’s line-up should give us a better idea of how his team will shape up for Gameweek 26.
