F1 Canadian GP live updates: Follow race coverage with George Russell on pole

We came into the Canadian Grand Prix weekend aware that the race for the Formula One championship felt wide open.

We didn’t expect this weekend’s race to feel like that. But here we are – the Canadian GP has served as a microcosm of this topsy-turvy 2024 season, with two days of intermittent rain, indecipherable lap times, and one of the most astonishing qualifying sessions in F1 history.

Today’s race is shrouded in uncertainty. George Russell is on pole for Mercedes, who haven’t won in 18 months. Max Verstappen starts in second, in his third straight week of dealing with Red Bull’s suddenly unreliable car. Lando Norris lurks in P3 in his third consecutive week, leading McLaren’s march to the front of the contender queue.

And overhead, the unruly Montreal clouds swirl, ready to unleash some rainy chaos at a moment’s notice.

It’s all to play for and should be a good one.
