Eric Dier has met the contractual obligations required to turn his Bayern Munich loan move into a permanent transfer this summer.

The original deal, struck with Tottenham Hotspur in January, was due to run until the end of the season, with an option for a further 12 months.

That option has now been triggered, which will tie the defender down through to June 2025.

Having paid Spurs a reported €4million loan fee, Bayern will effectively register the 30-year-old as a free agent when his Spurs contract expires.

The 33-time German champions have been pleased with the former England international’s contribution and leadership skills in Dier’s six appearances so far, including four starts.

The most recent of those saw him help Bayern to vital 2-1 home win against RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Dier’s terms in North London were scheduled to end once the 2023-23 campaign is over and he was allowed to talk with foreign clubs about a pre-contract agreement before joining Bayern.

He had been reduced to a bit-part role at Tottenham this season, making only four appearances in all competitions.

The winter arrival of Radu Dragusin pushed him down the pecking order, with full-backs Ben Davies and Emerson Royal preferred when first-choice pair Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero were unavailable.

Bayern — second in the Bundesliga — are next in action against SC Freiburg on Friday.
