Jack Hughes will miss the remainder of the Devils’ regular season and is set to undergo shoulder surgery on April 10, the team announced Tuesday. Hughes finishes his fifth season with 74 points in 62 games.

He is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for training camp.

“In recent conversations with Jack, his family and representatives, the Devils’ athlete care staff and Devils’ Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow, it was determined that Jack should be held out of game action for the rest of this season and proceed with shoulder surgery,” the Devils said in a statement.

Hughes missed time twice this season due to injury and has not been playing at 100 percent. His absences, as well as other Devils injuries, have contributed to a disappointing season. New Jersey had high hopes after winning a playoff series against the New York Rangers in 2023, but it has struggled with consistency throughout this season and will almost certainly miss the playoffs. Tom Fitzgerald fired coach Lindy Ruff midseason and traded away Tyler Toffoli at the deadline.

Though Hughes still scored at an elite clip this year, his numbers were down from 2022-23, when he had a career-best 99 points and 43 goals. At 22, he’s one of the league’s brightest stars when healthy. And with the Devils’ playoff hopes all but extinct, they can now focus on getting Hughes back to that point for 2024-25.

Hughes, 22, was the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. Through 306 career NHL games played, he has 114 goals and 167 assists.
