Former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has listed a Newcastle property he bought at just 17 for $360,000.

The four-bedroom house in the highly sought-after Merewether, is just 250m from the beach and is already attracting a lot of interest.

Listing agent Chasse Ede, from Presence, said the property was listed for sale via ‘Friendly Auction’ with a guide of $3 million.

He said Johns had owned the property for about 28 years and it had been “well received” locally.

Mr Ede said the property, at 31 Ranclaud St, Merewether, was on a block of just over 600sq m and properties with a similar land size had sold for between $8000 and $10,000sq m.

“And it’s all just 250m to the sand at Merewether,” he said.

Features of the property include four spacious bedrooms, multiple living areas to relax in and a large, air-conditioned attic space that could double as a home office, hobby room or kids’ games area.

“More than comfortable for today, this home presents itself as an ideal blank canvas, offering endless possibilities for renovation or rebuild, benefitting it’s beachside location (STCA),” the listing description says.

It also promotes the property’s stellar location.

“Whether you’re craving a laid-back drink and a bit to eat at the revamped Beach Hotel or fancy sipping cocktails with a view at The Surfhouse, you’ll never be short of options for wining and dining,” it says.

“And with the ocean baths just a stone’s throw away, you can squeeze in a refreshing swim before work or a leisurely sunset stroll along the coast.”

According to realestate.com.au, the home is one of several investment properties Johns bought.

In July 2020 it was listed for rent at $850 per week.

Johns also owns two other properties nearby, one of which he lives in.

Silverchair got their big break in 1994 when they won an national demo competition conducted by SBS TV show Nomad and ABC radio station Triple J.

The band, which also included Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou, signed with Murmur and went on to sell more than 10 million albums globally.

Johns later went on to have a successful solo career.

Nathan Hunter, also from Presence, is a co-agent on the property.
