Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is expected to be out for 12 weeks after picking up a hamstring injury.
The 28-year-old was forced off just before half-time in United’s 2-1 victory at Luton Town last Sunday. Prior to the game at Kenilworth Road, he was also replaced at the interval of his side’s win against Aston Villa on February 11.
Scans have since revealed the extent of Shaw’s injury, meaning he will be now spend some time on the sidelines and begin a rehabilitation period.
United’s manager Erik ten Hag said before the Luton encounter that Shaw was a doubt but that they were “positive” he would be able to play.
News of his latest setback will come as a blow to both United and England, with Shaw also hoping to make Gareth Southgate’s squad ahead of this summer’s European Championships in Germany.
United, meanwhile, have faced numerous injury setbacks at left-back during the 2023-24 season. Tyrell Malacia has yet to make an appearance after undergoing two knee surgeries, while Shaw has encountered various issues.
Last summer, United signed Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon on loan to cover for the injuries at left-back, and the 27-year-old made 12 appearances. The Old Trafford club, however, exercised their option to end his spell in the January transfer window, and he has since joined Brentford.
Shaw missed three months between August and November 2023 due to a muscle injury and following his return, his season was once again disrupted by a hamstring problem, causing him to miss four more games between December and January.
He made a comeback to first-team action at the start of February after recovering from the hamstring issue but has now suffered a similar injury.
Shaw’s struggles have limited him to making just 15 appearances across all competitions for United this season.
United are next in action this Saturday at home to Fulham in the Premier League.
