HOUSTON — Houston Astros star Yordan Alvarez exited Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels after an awkward slide into second base during a second-inning double. His exit comes a day before the Astros will welcome the Seattle Mariners to Minute Maid Park for a three-game series that could determine the American League West.

Alvarez appeared to be favoring his right leg after banging it into the dirt on his slide. Astros manager Joe Espada and assistant athletic trainer Eric Velazquez had a drawn-out discussion with Alvarez, who walked gingerly around the infield dirt while trying to test out his lower half.

Alvarez exited the game in favor of pinch-runner Mauricio Dubón, but did walk to the dugout under his own power. The team had no immediate update on Alvarez’s condition.

Alvarez’s double raised his batting average to a team-leading .308. His .959 OPS trails only Kyle Tucker for the team lead, but Tucker has taken 300 fewer plate appearances due to a shin fracture that sidelined him for three months.

Houston entered Sunday with a magic number of three to clinch its fourth consecutive division title over the Mariners.
