There are, on occasion, stark reminders that the current conflict in the Middle East is not just a battle of cultures or religions; it is a conflict of civilization against barbarity, of reason against savagery, of humanity against inhumanity. One such reminder is the case of Fawzia Amin Sido, an innocent girl taken from her home in Iraq by ISIS, sold into slavery in Gaza, and held there for ten years. We cannot know or imagine the abuse this innocent girl has suffered, but now that is over. Israeli Defense Forces troops, acting on information from the United States, have freed her from captivity and returned her to her family.

A young hostage kidnapped by ISIS terrorists at age 11 and then held by Hamas for a decade has been rescued by Israeli forces in Gaza after a months-long operation led by the US, officials said Thursday.

Fawzia Amin Sido, 21, was freed earlier this week, with footage showing her being embraced tightly by her emotional family soon after touching back down in her native Iraq.

“Fawzia, a Yazidi girl kidnapped by ISIS from Iraq and brought to Gaza at just 11 years old, has finally been rescued by the Israeli security forces,” tweeted David Saranga, the director of the digital diplomacy bureau at Israel’s foreign ministry.

While we rejoice for this innocent girl and her family, it’s important to absorb the lesson that this incident presents.

Israel is bearing most of the brunt of this conflict right now, and they seem to be handling it pretty well; there have been some downright brilliant operations aimed at revoking the birth certificates of Hezbollah and Hamas goblins recently, not the least of which was the pager-go-BOOM exercise, which was as much a psychological exercise as a tactical one. But it’s important to understand the nature of this conflict, which daily seems more likely to escalate beyond the bounds of the Middle East.

This is a conflict of good vs. evil. There is simply no other way to describe it.

Fawzia Amin Sido, an innocent girl, was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery. That’s an act of such depraved barbarity as to be hard to imagine among civilized people, and yet, that’s what happened. She was rescued by troops from Israel – the same Israel that clueless useful idiots on American college campuses accuse of “genocide.” Israel was acting on information provided by the United States – the same United States that the mullahs running the theocracy in Iran accuse of imperialism. The United States was given that information by unnamed officials in Iraq, which is unfortunately at the crossroads of the entire Middle East (and thus all its conflicts).

Civilized people don’t take children as captives and sell them into slavery. Good people don’t do these things. Uncivilized, evil people do these things. Savages, barbarians, and the utterly inhuman do these things.

And they would do them here, in the United States, given the opportunity.

Those are the stakes. Fawzia Amin Sido’s case serves as a horrible reminder. Her captivity is over, but she will bear the scars, emotional and physical, as long as she lives. She is back with her family, but the memory of her captivity will no doubt always haunt her. But if civilization does not prevail, her suffering, and the suffering of untold thousands like her, will have been for nothing.
