New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole is expected to miss at least one-to-two months as he undergoes additional testing on his right elbow, a league source told The Athletic. The New York Post was the first to report Cole’s initial injury timeline.
Cole will meet with sports surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles for further testing to completely rule out Tommy John surgery.
An MRI showed no tear in Cole’s UCL but did show inflammation in his elbow joint, a source with knowledge of the Yankees’ personnel decisions told The Athletic. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak freely. Cole wanted to get another, and perhaps deeper, look at the injury, the source said.
With Cole out an extended period, Carlos Rodón and Marcus Stroman are the likely candidates to start Opening Day against Houston on March 28. Luke Weaver, Cody Morris, Cody Poteet, Luis Gil and Will Warren will battle it out to join the Yankees’ rotation in Cole’s absence.
