Clearly, it’s still a sore subject.
Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres expressed surprise after New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman brought up how Torres wasn’t open to moving to third base last season.
“Still?” Torres posted Thursday night on X. “Just turn the (page).”

The comment came after Cashman spoke on YES Network detailing the club’s 2024 trade deadline acquisition of Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins.
“When I acquired Jazz,” Cashman said, “I acquired Jazz to be our second baseman and move Gleyber to third the rest of last year.
“(Manager Aaron Boone) wanted to do it the other way. He moved Jazz to third after we got him and Gleyber to second because Gleyber didn’t want to move to third, (he) was unwilling.”
Chisholm Jr. had been playing center field with the Marlins but immediately moved to third base for the Yankees and stayed there throughout the second half and the playoffs.
At the time, the club admitted it had discussed the possibility of Torres getting work at third base and playing there. But Torres didn’t seem thrilled about the idea.
“I’m a second baseman,” he said on July 28. “I play second.”
Torres left the Yankees via free agency this offseason, taking a one-year, $15 million deal from the Tigers. Detroit will play him at second base.
Torres had a rough 2024, especially defensively, where he led all MLB second basemen with 18 errors. Colt Keith of the Tigers had the second most at the position with 12. Torres also had a down season offensively, posting a 101 OPS+, though he hit well throughout most of the playoffs.
Chisholm, meanwhile, passed the eye test and was worth 8 Outs Above Average.
It’s unclear whether Chisholm will move back to second base in 2025. Boone said he expected that Chisholm would play second base with a competition at third base between DJ LeMahieu, Oswald Peraza and Oswaldo Cabrera, barring a trade that might push Chisholm back to third base.
“I don’t know which way we’re going between Jazz at third, Jazz at second and depending on who’s the mound, obviously between Peraza, Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu, (Jorbit) Vivas,” Cashman said. “We’re going to have some guys taking some reps, trying to earn a spot, whether it’s at second or third. The flexibility that the athleticism that Jazz provides gives us the ample opportunity to play it out. I’ll be comfortable when somebody solidifies that, whether it’s a platoon situation or if’s a solo shot.”
