The NBA suspended Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards for one game without pay on Friday for receiving his 16th technical foul of the season Thursday night.
NBA Executive VP and Head of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars announced the suspension in a news release.
The one-game suspension without pay is automatic for a player or coach who compiles 16 technical fouls, per NBA rules. Every two additional technical fouls will result in an additional one-game suspension without pay.
Edwards hit the 16-technical threshold in the third quarter of Minnesota’s 111-102 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night when he got tangled up with Gabe Vincent and went down to the ground. Edwards looked at official Brent Barnaky and argued for a foul call, leading to the technical foul. Since it was his second technical of the game, Edwards was also ejected from the game.
Edwards then tossed the ball into the stands at L.A.’s Cryto.com Arena, which could also set him up for a fine in addition to his suspension. Edwards has already been fined $285,000 for five separate infractions this season.
“He’s got to be better,” Wolves coach Chris Finch said after Thursday’s game. “He’s had too many outbursts. I think a lot of them are deserved. They’re going to miss some calls from time to time for sure.”
Edwards will serve his suspension tonight when the Timberwolves play the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City.
