The biggest story in the world on Friday night was the bout between social media dude Jake Paul and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. My colleague Jerry Wilson captured the evening’s activities, including the main event. I encourage you to check out his full report.

Wilson wrote:

Tyson, who as I said has no business fighting anyone, squared off against Paul, who, were he to take on any current Top 10 heavyweight contender, would be canvas pizza before the bell starting the first round stopped ringing. The bout had all the action of a snail race in a salt mine. From the beginning, Paul clearly wanted no part of standing toe-to-toe with Tyson, who understandably tired quickly but was never genuinely touched by one of Paul’s few punches thrown before yet another retreat. Nevertheless, Paul won the decision while Tyson earned the respect of everyone from Gen X on back, by simply showing up in surprisingly good shape and remaining alive throughout the proceedings.

I thought that what Jake Paul told a ringside reporter immediately after the fight was refreshing, when so many in the entertainment world only sem to think about themselves. The boxer’s first thoughts after winning the bout were not about his victory; with a spirit of humility, they were thoughts of deep gratitude.

Paul said:

Tonight’s not about me, man, I wanted to give a thanks to all the real heroes: the U.S. military, the doctors [and] the nurses in the E.R., the cops, the firefighters, the farmers, the truck drivers.

He called them “the people who make this world go around.” Then, seemingly referring to President-elect Donald Trump’s win in the election, he thanked someone else–you and me:

Thank you, America. It’s the era of truth, it’s an era of good. There’s a shift in the world. Good is rising. The truth is rising.

Then he said he was “honored to be a part of America,” exclaiming, “We’re back, baby!”

This isn’t the first time RedState’s written about the results of a boxing match involving Paul, incredible as that might sound. There were even a little politics mixed in. Back in 2020, my colleague Brandon Morse shared a story about a podcast interview with Paul, the day after a fight. In it, Jemele Hill (with a straight face) actually asked the boxer whether the fact that he had just knocked out a Black fighter was racist.

Leave it to the left to never, ever change.
