Villarreal and Valencia have confirmed that they are working with the authorities after two disabled Villarreal fans were physically assaulted following a La Liga match between the clubs on Saturday.
The supporters were attacked outside Villarreal’s stadium, the Estadio de la Ceramica, after the 1-1 draw.
According to Villarreal’s statement, one of the individuals plays for the club’s EDI side — a team for players with disabilities — and “spent the night under observation to undergo tests for contusions.” The other supporter suffered “a complete maxillofacial fracture” and was taken to Castellon General Hospital where he remains.
The club confirmed that they are cooperating with the National Police.
“Villarreal CF would like to reiterate the club’s absolute condemnation and utmost repudiation of any act of violence in any form, which has no place in football and society, and wishes to show its support for those affected, with whom it has been in permanent contact and collaboration since the aggression,” the club said in the statement.
Valencia have also condemned the incident.
“Football does not tolerate violence in any form, stadiums should be a place free of hatred and the Club condemns these acts that do not represent the fundamental values of sport or the healthy coexistence and respect between fans that was evident throughout the match,” Valencia said, adding that they are “at the disposal of the authorities”.
Valencia also stated that the aggressor or aggressors will be banned from the team’s stadium if they are identified as members of the club.
