Saturday was a very busy day for women’s soccer at these Games and we got drama in all four quarterfinals.
The USWNT needed a moment of magic in extra time from Trinity Rodman to beat a resolute Japan side. before 2023 Women’s World Cup winners Spain came back from the brink of elimination to defeat Colombia on penalties.
Germany also needed penalties to progress to the semifinal after a cagey goalless draw with reigning champions Canada.
And, in the last of the quarterfinals, the hosts were knocked out after a late winning goal from Brazil’s Portilho.
- USWNT 1-0 (AET) Japan (Rodman)
- Spain 2-2 Colombia (Hermoso, Paredes; Ramirez, Santos) – Spain won 4-2 on penalties
- Canada 0-0 Germany – Germany won 4-2 on penalties
