Bournemouth midfielder and USMNT international Tyler Adams will miss the start of the 2024-25 season after undergoing back surgery.

The 25-year-old started in all three of his nation’s Copa America matches this summer, although he was withdrawn at half-time in the 2-0 victory over Bolivia and in the 2-1 defeat to Panama.

Adams has been impacted by injury issues over the past year, and did not feature between March 2023 and March 2024 due to a hamstring issue.

The central midfielder, who also played in a pre-tournament friendly against Brazil for his nation, is now set for a period of months on the sidelines with a back injury.

Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola has explained that Adams was not fully fit and “in pain” before going on international duty.

“He wanted to play Copa America because it was very important for him, but he had restrictions and was still in pain, so two days after they were knocked out, he had surgery,” Iraola said.

“He is out for some time. It is difficult to say how long but he won’t be fit for the start of the season. But September? October? I don’t know.”

Speaking of why Bournemouth did not prevent Adams from going on international duty, Iraola said: “It was not our choice. It is a decision for the nations, who are allowed to select players, and he wanted to play thinking the injury would get better but he felt it was getting worse.”
