It was a busy day for the American players at the U.S. Open yesterday.

And it didn’t get off to a very good start as Sebastian Korda was beaten in two hours and two minutes (4-6, 2-6, 4-6) by Tomas Machac, a player 23 places below him in the rankings.

And then, on Ashe, 20-year-old Alex Michelsen was routinely beaten (4-6, 0-6, 2-6) by world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Fortunately for the home support, Tommy Paul was able to restore some hope on the men’s side as he was leading Max Purcell 7-5, 6-0, 1-0 when the Australian retired with an injury.

The mixed bag of results was the same on the women’s side. As mentioned, Krueger advanced, as did Jessica Pegula in the all-American clash against Sophia Kenin (7-6, 6-3).

But there were defeats for Caroline Dolehide (5-7, 5-7 against Sara Errani) and Varvara Lepchenko (3-6, 4-6 against Anastasia Potapova).
