Tyler Adams: Bournemouth believe 'anything is possible' after Newcastle win

Tyler Adams says Bournemouth believe “anything is possible” after moving to within one point of the Champions League places following Saturday’s win over in-form Newcastle United.

Bournemouth won 4-1 at St James’ Park following a Justin Kluivert hat-trick and stoppage-time goal from Milos Kerkez to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 10 matches.

The victory moved Andoni Iraola’s side above Manchester City — who play Ipswich Town on Sunday — and into sixth in the Premier League, just one point behind Newcastle in fourth.

“Andoni actually told us at the beginning of the season we only picked up two points last season against the top six, and this season we’re finding that confidence to play with the big boys and we’re showing that week in, week out now,” Adams told TNT Sport. “As long as we have this belief I think anything’s possible. I have belief in this team.”

Asked about the possibility of Champions League qualification, Adams replied: “I would love to (hear the Champions League music). I’ve heard it before so I’d love to hear it again.”

He continued: “I don’t think we want to put expectations on what we can achieve, we want to be realistic with how we’re playing. When we take it game by game, we’ve found this confidence in the way we’re playing, we match up well against any team, you don’t want to slip up and lose that feeling.”

Bournemouth earned particular praise for their aggressive, front-footed style of play and the manner in which they took the game to Newcastle at St James’ Park, with Saturday’s opponents on their own impressive run of form, having won six in a row in the Premier League.

“It’s a controlled chaos,” the USMNT midfielder added, having set up Kluivert to complete his hat-trick after winning the ball back deep in the Newcastle half.  “We want to make the game as chaotic as possible but controlled for us.

“We try and overwhelm the opponent as much as possible but for us it feels normal. We’re running all over the place, we know I have the freedom to step, I know centre-backs are coming with me. The No 10 has freedom to step, they know I’m coming with them.

“It’s this trust but you have to have the nuance to it as well. You can’t go flying into tackles all over the pitch, you have to be smart, because we know we can leave ourselves vulnerable at times.”

High-tempo, all-action Bournemouth are what Premier League football in 2025 is all about

Bournemouth’s victory came despite an extensive injury list, with Evanilson, Marcos Senesi, Julian Araujo, Marcus Tavernier, Alex Scott, Luis Sinisterra, Adam Smith, Enes Unal and James Hill all sidelined.

Adams, who has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season after returning from a lengthy injury lay-off of his own, praised his side’s mentality in the face of adversity.

“The system that we play, you have to be a certain type of player to fit into the style, you have to have the mentality to press, and run, and compete,” he said. “We’re down thin right now, we have a lot of young guys on the bench. Once a guy goes down, we’re not worried about looking at the bench and who’s on the bench, we just know we have to be ready.”

Bournemouth return to action against second-placed Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
