Out of an impressive group of finalists, the winners of 2024’s Dayton Literary Peace Prize were announced today. The prizes are given to “writers whose work demonstrates the power of the written word to foster peace, social justice, and global understanding.” This year’s winners are:

The 2024 Ambassador Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award

President Jimmy Carter

2024 Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Fiction

Paul Lynch, Prophet Song (Grove Atlantic)

2024 Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Nonfiction

Victor Luckerson, Built From the Fire (Random House)

The runners-up for fiction is The Postcard by Anne Berest and translated by Tina Kover, and for non-fiction is Red Memory by Tania Branigan. The winners and runners-up receive a cash prize and will be honored at a ceremony in Dayton, Ohio in a few months, on November 9-10.

President Carter’s Achievement Award is a celebration of the many years he has dedicated to writing and to justice. The Executive Director of the Prize Foundation, Nicholas A. Raines, said that “As the author of thirty-two books and the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize…there is perhaps no other single person in history who better represents ‘the power of the written words to foster peace, social justice, and global understanding’ than President Carter.”

There’s lots more on the winners and the prizes, as well as tickets for the award ceremony with President Carter, available at Dayton Literary Peace Prize’s website.
