WHAT’S ON TAP?

Today on Capitol Hill…

The last of President Trump’s Cabinet picks made it across the finish line Monday afternoon, with the Senate voting 67-32 to confirm Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Labor Secretary. (Seventeen Democrats gave Chavez-DeRemer a thumbs up; the only Republican “no” votes were Sen. Ted Budd (NC), Sen. Mitch McConnell (KY), and Sen. Rand Paul (KY).)

Additionally, the House Rules Committee prepped the funding CR for a vote by the full House on Tuesday. The Freedom Caucus is on board with it, but there are still several Republicans who have signaled they’re a “no,” including Rep. Thomas Massie (KY). President Trump reportedly worked the phones Monday, and Vice President JD Vance is on the Hill this AM to meet with the House GOP conference. Per the latest rundown (which I highly encourage you to read if you want the skinny on what to expect today), the vote is expected sometime after 4:00 p.m. Eastern Tuesday.

Meetings/hearings set for Tuesday include:

  • Senate Armed Services — Hearings to examine stabilizing the Military Health System to prepare for large-scale combat operations
  • House Financial Services — Navigating the Digital Payments Ecosystem: Examining a Federal Framework for Payment Stablecoins and Consequences of a U.S. Central Bank Digital Currency
  • House Judiciary, Administrative State, Regulatory Reform, and Antitrust Subcommittee — “Antitrust Law and the NCAA: Examining the Current Climate”
  • House Oversight and Government Reform, Government Operations Subcommittee — “Shifting Gears: Moving from Recovery to Prevention of Improper Payments and Fraud”
  • House Armed Services, Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee — The State of U.S. Shipbuilding
  • House Education and Workforce, Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee — “Education Without Limits: Exploring the Benefits of School Choice”
  • House Homeland Security, Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability Subcommittee — “Eliminating Waste, Fraud, and Abuse at the Department of Homeland Security: Addressing the Biden-Harris Administration’s Failures”

White House What’s Up

President Donald Trump started out his Tuesday (or ended his Monday) with a show of support for Elon Musk and the work he’s doing with DOGE.

He’s set to have lunch with Vice President JD Vance and then, later in the afternoon, will deliver remarks at the Business Roundtable Quarterly Meeting.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will hold a 1:00 p.m. Eastern briefing.

Keeping Up With the Cabinet

Sec. State – Marco Rubio — Rubio is in Saudi Arabia for talks on a potential Ukraine peace deal.

Sec. Treasury – Scott Bessent — Bessent is welcoming Treasury employees back to the office.

Sec. Interior – Doug Burgum — Burgum formally announced the renaming of the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge to the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge.

Sec. Labor – Lori Chavez-DeRemer — Chavez-DeRemer, as noted above, was confirmed by the Senate on Monday.

Sec. Health & Human Services – Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — Kennedy met with Big Food CEOs on Monday. He also visited Steak ‘n Shake with Sean Hannity.

Sec. Transportation – Sean Duffy — Duffy announced the rescission of Biden memos injecting DEI and woke ideology into the infrastructure-building process.

Sec. Homeland Security – Kristi Noem — Noem swore in Secret Service Director Sean Curran on Monday.

Dir. Federal Bureau of Investigations – Kash Patel — Patel welcomed Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins to the FBI on Monday for a tour along with Texas A&M students.

Dir. National Intelligence – Tulsi Gabbard — Gabbard formally stripped security clearances from the 51 spies who lied — and others — per President Trump’s directive.

Full Court Press…

We got an excellent explainer yesterday from Shipwreckedcrew regarding the Office of the Pardon Attorney and why Liz Oyer’s dismissal from it may signal an investigation is underway as to some of those last-minute pardons issued by former President Joe Biden.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Keep an eye on the CR battle, as the deadline to avert a government shutdown looms at the end of the week.

As noted above, Chavez-DeRemer’s confirmation marks the last of Trump’s Cabinet picks to be placed. There will likely be a vote next week on Elise Stefanik as U.N. Ambassador (following the vote(s) on the CR).

MORNING MUSING

I’m old enough that I remember Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) playing the role of “reasonable” Democrat in her response to President Trump’s address to Congress last week. In the unlikely chance that anyone was fooled by that presentation, the mask has slipped with her tweet regarding Elon Musk’s comment to Larry Kudlow regarding Social Security. She and her Dem cohorts clearly are going to ride the “They Want to Kill Grandma” train right off the rails, as they dishonestly claim that Musk “said the quiet part out loud” and is “going after your Social Security and Medicare. Period.” Yeah. That would be rather alarming if he’d actually said that — not only because that would be unwise politically but because it would completely contradict what President Trump himself has said. Except…Elon didn’t say that. He specifically referred to “the waste and fraud in entitlement spending.” But you go on with your bad self, Elissa. We see you.

LIGHTER FARE

Sadly, since the DDOS attack on X Monday, the tweet embed function isn’t working right, so I can’t share this here the way I normally would, but…trust me — it’s worth the click.
