Threads users can now follow profiles from other fediverse servers

A new update from Meta’s X competitor Instagram Threads allows users to connect more with the fediverse, which is also called the open social web and includes services like Flipboard, Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, and more. On Wednesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that users can now follow profiles from other fediverse servers.

Starting today, users who have turned on sharing to the fediverse are able to follow people from other fediverse servers who have liked, followed, or replied to federated profiles on Threads. 

When scrolling through Threads, users can now go to someone’s profile and see all their posts on other servers. They can also be notified on Threads when that person posts on their server.

The announcement is part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to achieve full interoperability for the platform. In October, Threads began allowing users who have connected their accounts to the fediverse to be able to see who follows them and likes their posts from other servers. Users can also see their fediverse replies. 

The company has let users connect their accounts to the fediverse since March.
