Cities in New York and New Jersey top the list of highest rents in the country, earning the first and second place honors.

Rents have soared across the nation, with average rates for one-bedroom apartments across the country topping $1,526 in June. Two-bedrooms rates are now at $1,900 across the country.

But, that’s not even half of what it would take to rent in New York and Jersey City.

New York City has the highest average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment at $4,300 and $4,750 for a two-bedroom apartment, according to the Zumper National Rent Index.

Jersey City, New Jersey had the second highest average rent at $3,290 a month for a one-bedroom apartment and $3,530 for a two-bedroom apartment.

Making a notable appearance on the list, was the city of Newark, New Jersey, coming in at number 29 with a monthly average rent of $1,580 for a one-bedroom and $2,200 for a two-bedroom.

The national rent index report forecasts that housing will “remain a challenge for the Federal Reserve’s efforts to lower interest rates this year as inflation stays sticky and national rent prices continue to increase.”
