There’s a famous line from the film “On Golden Pond” by the great Katharine Hepburn: “The loons! The loons! They’re welcoming us back.”

Well, the loons are back in D.C., but they’re not here to welcome Donald Trump as he prepares for his inauguration on Monday; they’re here to scream, thrash, make a commotion, and just generally behave like escaped mental patients.

It’s not like they haven’t done it before—remember 2017, when they engaged in tasteless P-Hat protests around the city and the nation as a whole? So brave. (Warning: some of the signs and slogans are profane and nasty.)

That was the day after Trump’s first inauguration, and now some of the usual suspects are back in town to screech their hatred for the president-elect.

The D.C. People’s March, organized by several activist groups, kicked off Saturday morning. It will culminate in a rally outside the Lincoln Memorial at 3 p.m., and about 50,000 people are expected to attend.

On Sunday, Trump will host a rally at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, where allies such as tech billionaire Elon Musk are expected to deliver remarks. The Village People, Kid Rock and Billy Ray Cyrus are also set to perform.

While the protesters are making plenty of noise, their numbers pale so far in comparison to what we’ve seen in recent years. Perhaps the Democrats getting thumped in the elections has dampened their enthusiasm?

This outlet alleges that at least some of the protesters are vandalizing property. Where’s AG Merrick Garland? Oh yeah, he left his office for the last time Friday.

The protests don’t seem particularly consequential, but that could change; in 2017, as many as 4.6 million people around the country—including almost 700,000 in DC alone–participated in the Women’s March, and some call it the largest single-day demonstration in our history. This one could gain steam, but the poor darlings will be awfully cold—temperatures are forecast to be in the low 20s on Monday with a nasty wind chill.

The P-Hat demonstrations, in my view, represent one of the lowest points in ProgressiveWorld in modern times. I saw people I knew and liked excitedly book their flights to Washington so they could put offensive hats on their daughters’ heads as if this was saying something profound (it wasn’t). While women’s rights are an important issue, I don’t see how debasing yourself and donning offensive gear that is demeaning to females is the way toward progress.

Let’s think of something nicer:
