The Houston Texans have hired Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Nick Caley as offensive coordinator, the team announced Monday.
Caley replaces Bobby Slowik, who was fired after two seasons with the franchise. Caley has spent the past two seasons with the Rams after spending eight seasons with the New England Patriots — serving six of those seasons as tight ends coach. He drew interest from other teams over the past few seasons before opting to join Houston.
As passing game coordinator, Caley helped the Rams offense finish 10th in the NFL in passing yards per game (227.5) despite missing top targets Cooper Kupp for five games and Puka Nacua for six games. Los Angeles won the NFC West — reaching the divisional round of the playoffs where they were eliminated by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Caley will be tasked with improving a Texans offense that ranked 12th in yards per game (342.4) and 13th in points per game (22.2) in 2023 to 22nd (319.7 yards per game) and 19th (21.9) in those respective categories in 2024.
With Houston, Caley inherits a group that is led by quarterback C.J. Stroud, wide receiver Nico Collins and running back Joe Mixon. The team’s offensive line will need a boost as it was tied for the third-most sacks allowed (54) this season.
Under head coach DeMeco Ryans, the Texans have won the AFC South and reached the divisional round of the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.
