Tesla has recalled an estimated 1,849,638 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y (pictured) vehicles from 2020 – 2024 model years.
Tesla is recalling an estimated 1,849,638 units of certain 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles due to issues with the hood latch assembly that may fail to detect an unlatched hood condition.
Beginning on July 15, 2024, vehicles in production received an update incorporating the software to remedy the issue described.
Reason for the Recall
The hood latch assembly may fail to detect an unlatched hood condition after the hood has been opened, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported. This could result in the unlatched hood fully opening while someone is operating the vehicle.
If the hood unlatches and fully opens, it can obstruct the driver’s view and increase the risk of a crash. The vehicle’s firmware is meant to detect the open hood and provide a customer-facing user interface notification of the hood’s open state.
As of July 20, 2024, Tesla has identified three related warranty claims or field reports for U.S. vehicles. Data shows that occurrence rates were higher in China for unknown reasons compared to lower rates in Europe and North America markets.
Beginning on June 18, 2024, at no cost to customers, affected vehicles received an over-the-air software remedy with firmware release 2024.20.3. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on September 22, 2024.
