The National Book Award winner follows Willis Wu as he struggles to become the protagonist of his own life, and break out of his constant typecasting as Generic Asian Man, Background Oriental Making a Weird Face, or Disgraced Son. Caught in the background of a forever-in-production police procedural called “Black and White,” Willis manages to escape the stereotypes and snag the spotlight, “discovering not only the secret history of Chinatown, but the buried legacy of his own family. Infinitely inventive and deeply personal, exploring the themes of pop culture, assimilation, and immigration.”

In addition to another novel, How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe, Yu also wrote for the HBO show Westworld. The novel Interior Chinatown was notably written in screenplay formatting—a filmed adaptation can’t have been far from most readers’ minds.

All ten episodes of the series are coming out on Tuesday, November 19 on Hulu.
