Taiwo Awoniyi will not be part of the Nottingham Forest squad that travels for a training camp in Spain.

As reported by The Athletic on Saturday, the striker has been granted time away from the club while he deals with a family matter.

It is unclear whether the Nigeria international will join up with his team-mates at any point in Spain, where they will play three games at the Pinetar Arena in Murcia, starting with a friendly against Sunderland on Friday (7pm BST), followed by games against Millwall (Tuesday July 23, 7pm) and Elche (Saturday July 27, 11am).

Awoniyi, had a frustrating time last season, when he suffered several spells on the sidelines through injury.

The 26-year-old was able to start last season in the Forest side, scoring in his first three Premier League appearances.

He then suffered a recurrence of a groin injury as the campaign unfolded and surgery on the issue saw him miss much of December and January, including the Africa Cup of Nations. A thigh injury later ruled him out for six weeks in March and April.

In total, Awoniyi made 12 starts and eight substitute appearances in the top flight, scoring six goals.

Forest begin their 2024-25 Premier League campaign at home against Bournemouth on August 17. Before that, they play friendlies against Villarreal on August 2 and Olympiacos on August 8.
