The name of the man shot and killed by a Shelby Police officer at the Oak Tree Lodge in the early morning hours of Sat., Dec. 7, has been released.

According to Shelby Police, John Paul Carter, 45, was killed after officers responded to the lodge regarding a domestic dispute.

Capt. Seth Treadway said Carter had listed his residence as the Oak Tree Lodge, located near Showmar’s on East Dixon Boulevard.

Treadway said the name of the officer is still being withheld, but he has been with the department since 2019 and currently serves on the patrol division as a supervisor. As of Friday, he was still on administrative leave.

Police said Carter was armed with knives at the time of the shooting.

According to a news release, officers responded to a domestic dispute at Oak Tree Lodge just before 4:30 a.m.

“Upon their arrival, they encountered a male subject armed with several knives,” the release said. “As officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, gunshots were fired, and the armed male was struck by gunfire.”

Cleveland County Emergency Medical Services and Shelby Fire and Rescue were immediately called, and officers on scene provided first aid assistance until they arrived, the release said.

Carter was taken to Atrium Health Cleveland where he later died as a result of his injuries.

The release said as is normal protocol, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation was notified, and the agency is conducting an investigation into the incident. Treadway said Friday that investigation is still ongoing.

On Carter’s tribute wall posted on Cremation Society of Charlotte, a woman described Carter as a giving man who helped the homeless and loved his two dogs.
