Riccardo Bigon has been appointed City Football Group’s new global football technical director.

The Italian, 53, joined the organisation from Bologna last year where he was sporting director for six years.

Ferran Soriano, chief executive of City Football Group (CFG), sent an email to staff members this morning confirming the appointment before holding a briefing to explain how the new structure will work.

It continues the changes at CFG with Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain set to be replaced by Sporting Lisbon’s Hugo Viana at the end of the season.

Brian Marwood is managing director of global football services and will remain in place, but Bigon will now work alongside him and assume more responsibility within the structure.

Marwood, 64, originally joined City as a football administrator in 2009 before taking over his current position. While he will retain decision-making power he is now understood to be taking on more of a mentorship role within the group.
