The Real Estate Institute of New South Wales (REINSW) has announced that Barry Johnston has stepped down from his role as President, citing personal and business obligations.

Mr Johnston, who has been a long-standing member of the REINSW Board for ten years, said the increasing demands of both his family and professional commitments have made it difficult for him to continue dedicating the time and energy required to lead the organisation.

During his tenure as President, Mr Johnston oversaw several key initiatives, including the successful launch of the annual Commercial Property Summit and the establishment of a new stream of agency practice focused on Tenant Representation.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as President of the REINSW. It has been an honour to work alongside such a dedicated team. However, the industry is at a pivotal time, with significant changes impacting our industry including AML, Strata, Residential Tenancy Reform and a range of other compliance and lobbying items,” said Mr Johnston.

“This requires a President who can dedicate the necessary time and energy to effectively represent our members and advance our collective interests. Due to unforeseen circumstances, my priority is to pass the Presidency batten over to a fellow Board member with the capacity to advocate fully and effectively for our members at this time.”

Mr Johnston’s decision to step down comes at a critical time for the real estate industry, as new regulations and reforms continue to shape the market. His leadership and advocacy have been vital in guiding members through these challenges, particularly during times of significant industry change.

REINSW Chief Executive Officer, Timothy McKibbin, paid tribute to Mr Johnston’s leadership, recognising the positive impact he has had on the organisation.

“Barry has been a committed and passionate advocate for our industry. I know his decision to step down has been a difficult one. We fully support him as he prioritises his family and business obligations. We also sincerely thank him for his achievements at REINSW and his service to the Industry, not only as President, but also for his ten years on the Board.”

The REINSW Board is expected to announce Johnston’s successor soon.
