The Boston Red Sox have made an addition to their beleaguered bullpen ahead of the trade deadline on Tuesday, adding right-handed reliever Lucas Sims from the Cincinnati Reds for minor-league right-hander Ovis Portes.
Sims, 30, was the longest-tenured Reds player on the roster entering Tuesday, having come to Cincinnati at the deadline in 2018.
The former first-round pick of the Braves resurrected his career with the Reds, turning into a high-leverage reliever on the basis of his slider that has evolved into a sweeper.
Sims has 40 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings, but also 20 walks, limiting his effectiveness at times.
