Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is set to miss up to seven weeks through injury after suffering a ligament sprain in his left knee.

The France international sustained the injury during a small-sided training session at the National Stadium in Warsaw ahead of Madrid’s UEFA Super Cup match against Italian club Atalanta.

Tests carried out by the club on Wednesday diagnosed the 21-year-old with a sprained ligament, which is likely to keep him out for a period of around seven weeks.

Camavinga will the Super Cup and up to seven of Madrid’s opening La Liga matches, with the possibility that Camavinga returns for the Madrid derby away to Atletico, a game currently scheduled for the weekend of September 28-29.

Madrid beat off competition from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain to sign Camavinga in 2021.

He has made 145 first-team appearances for the Spanish club over three seasons, winning nine trophies in that timeframe including two La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns.

Camavinga, who has been capped 21 times by France, started 21 league matches in 2023-24 and played from the start in nine Champions League matches, including the final victory over Borussia Dortmund.
