Raine & Horne’s 140-year commemorative book has been recognised as a finalist for Custom Publication of the Year at the Mumbrella Publish Awards.

The Announcement:

“From Homesteads to High-Rises: 140 Years of Raine & Horne”, a 150+ page coffee-table chronicle, was named a finalist for Custom Publication of the Year at the Mumbrella Publish Awards in Sydney.

Executive Chairman Angus Raine led the project, which required years of research into the brand’s extensive archives.

The book celebrates Raine & Horne’s 140-year history of innovation and success in real estate.

Competing against established publishers, including a major regional NSW newspaper, a regional airline publication, and a trade title from a publishing giant, made the finalist position an exceptional achievement for Raine & Horne, primarily a real estate company.

The publication, featuring a foreword by leading financial commentator Paul Clitheroe, was initially scheduled for release around Raine & Horne’s 140th anniversary on 23 May 2023.

The release was delayed following the passing of Max Raine in February 2023. As a key figure in the brand’s history since the 1950s, the former chairman significantly contributed to the firm’s legacy by transitioning to a franchising model in the late 1970s.

Mr Raine expressed his appreciation for the recognition from the publishing industry.

“This award reflects the dedication and hard work of our network, as well as Raine & Horne’s enduring legacy across Australasia,” Mr Raine said.

“The recognition is particularly gratifying as we’re primarily in real estate, not publishing. Competing with successful publishers, including a major regional NSW newspaper, a regional airline publication, and a title from a trade publishing giant, is a remarkable accomplishment.

“We take great pride in this publication, which not only celebrates our rich history spanning three centuries but also honours the remarkable individuals who have contributed to our success.”

In 2021, experienced publishing creative Sam Grimmer was tasked with developing a contemporary design style and visual language for the book, authored by the team at communications agency Corpwrite Australia.

“Raine & Horne’s extensive history provided a rich archive of historical and contemporary images. As the saying goes, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’, and we’ve incorporated around 300 images. Combined with 40,000 words, we’re telling quite an extensive story!” Mr Grimmer said.

A significant technical challenge in producing ‘From Homesteads to High-Rises: 140 Years of Raine & Horne’ was the restoration and retouching of numerous newspaper clippings and pictorial images. While these were valuable and essential to the narrative, many were very old and had deteriorated over time.
