Aston Villa defender Matty Cash has been omitted from Poland’s preliminary squad for this summer’s European Championship in Germany as he continues his rehabilitation from injury.
The 26-year-old missed Aston Villa’s final two games of the Premier League season after picking up an injury in training prior to their 3-3 draw with Liverpool on May 13.
Cash — who played every minute of Poland’s 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar — will not travel to Germany after being left out of head coach Michal Probierz’s 29-man training squad on Wednesday.
He made four appearances in their Euro 2024 qualification campaign — including the play-off semi-final win over Estonia.
Arsenal’s Jacub Kiwior, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Jakub Moder and Southampton’s Jan Bednarek are the only two English-based representatives in the squad.
Poland’s all-time leading goalscorer Robert Lewandowski is in line to make his sixth appearance at a major tournament for his country.
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny is expected to be Poland’s No 1 in Germany, with Bologna’s Lukasz Skorupski the main backup.
Fernando Santos — who led Portugal to glory at Euro 2016 — was dismissed as Poland head coach following defeat to Albania last September and replaced by Probierz in September.
Probierz will have to cut his squad down to 26 before the start of the tournament.
Poland are in Group D alongside 2022 World Cup finalists France, the Netherlands and Ralf Rangnick’s Austria.
