PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A frequently photographed tree that served as an Oregon landmark for more than 100 years was blown over during a recent coastal windstorm.

The tree growing from Tillamook Bay’s Three Graces snapped on or before Dec. 27, Tillamook County Emergency Management Director Randy Thorpe confirmed with KOIN 6 news Monday. The damage occurred after powerful 50 to 60-mph winds hammered the Oregon coast on Christmas night.

“The tree was known as the Landmark Tree,” Thorpe said. “It was located on one of the rock formations.”

The tree was a popular sight for drivers cruising Highway 101 between Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi, and a popular perch for roosting seabirds. Tillamook County local Romy Carver said that the tree died some years ago, but locals are still mourning the loss of the treasured landmark.

“It’s kind of iconic around here, and people like watching the birds nest in it,” Carver said. “Lots of people are pretty sad about the tree blowing down.”

The tree’s exact age isn’t known. However, historical photographs from as early as 1910 show the tree growing from the sea stack.
