Ohio State University has canceled in-person classes on its Columbus campus on Monday, the first day back after winter break, according to OSU’s Department of Public Safety.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington issued a winter storm advisory for up to a half-foot of snow and some mixed precipitation beginning Sunday and in effect to 11:59 p.m. Monday for Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Madison and Union counties in central Ohio. Pickaway and Fairfield counties in central Ohio were looking at potentially higher amounts of up to 8 inches or more.

Ohio State said in a news alert that the storm will include accumulating snow and wind overnight and during the early morning hours in Columbus, which could make for dangerous driving conditions. The university canceled in-person classes, but encouraged instructors to host virtual synchronous classes if possible. Classes scheduled to meet online will take place as planned.

OSU’s main Columbus campus rarely cancels classes for winter weather. The university has canceled classes just 20 times, including Monday’s cancellation, on the Columbus campus since 1978.

While in-person classes are canceled, the rest of Columbus campus will remain open. Classes are expected to resume in-person on Tuesday.
