Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is set for a lengthy period on the sidelines after suffering another injury setback.

The 32-year-old has made just four appearances so far this season and only recently returned after a long-term back injury.

Now a hamstring problem — a third after suffering twice with a similar issue last season — is expected to keep him out of Eddie Howe’s side until well into the new year.

Wilson returned to Howe’s squad for the first time since the final day of the 2023-24 season late last month and has come on as a substitute in all of the club’s four Premier League games since.

He last featured on Saturday, playing 17 minutes of the 4-2 defeat at Brentford.

Writing on Instagram Wilson said needs to “take a little step backwards” but promised to do all he can to return stronger.

“Despite all the hard work l’ve put in pushing to get back to full fitness, I need to take a little step backwards unfortunately, guys,” he posted.

“Frustrating as it is for everyone out there waiting for my return and to be able to help the team, these shortcomings also upset and frustrate me more than anybody else.

“I will, and I am doing everything in my power to rediscover the best version of myself and finally get off this emotional rollercoaster, which I’m hoping 2025 will bring.

“Appreciate the patience, love and support from all those closest that know how hard I really work and how professional I always am.”

Wilson, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, has been a key contributor for Newcastle since joining from Bournemouth in 2020, scoring 48 goals in 112 appearances in all competitions.

Newcastle have often struggled for goals in Wilson’s absence this term, scoring just 19 times in 15 matches in the Premier League.

They currently sit 12th in the table and next face Leicester City on Saturday.
