A winter storm is expected to bring widespread snowfall to New England overnight, potentially impacting the Wednesday morning commute.

Snow squalls were popping up in parts of western Massachusetts and New Hampshire on Tuesday morning, including at Ragged Mountain in Danbury.

New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management warned motorists of possible white-out conditions during the commutes with gusts up to 35 mph.

Snow squalls typically don’t produce much snow, but they can create dangerous conditions on the roads due to suddenly reduced visibility.

In Massachusetts, the best chance for a snow squall will come through late Tuesday morning, according to Boston 25 Meteorologist Shiri Spear.

A clipper system will approach the region on Tuesday night, bringing light snow into early Wednesday morning.

Spear said it won’t be a major snowstorm, but Bay Staters can expect anywhere from a light dusting to about 3 inches of snow.

Most of Massachusetts could see up to 3 inches of snow, while parts of the South Shore, South Coast, Cape Cod, and the Islands will see a coating to 1 inch of snow.

The snow is expected to stick to the ground from midnight to 5 a.m.

“The timing means this could cause some slowdowns for your Wednesday morning commute, so plan accordingly,” Spear said.

When the snow moves out, temperatures will climb into the 40s.

The Boston 25 Weather team is also keeping an eye on another weather system that could bring rain for the weekend.
