Murder in a Small Town fans might have to prepare for a bit of a rough patch between Cassandra and Karl.
Kristin Kreuk exclusively told Us Weekly how a case that hits close to home will affect the fan-favorite couple. “There’s going to end up being some true peril that really puts [Cassandra] and Karl in conflict that is quite difficult to resolve,” she teased. “And they end up at a bit of an impasse.”
The actress, 41, hinted at some “relationship drama” in addition to Murder in a Small Town‘s usual storytelling, adding, “It will continue to be a cozy and fun watch. And there is — as always — on every TV show, a ton of problems coming up and murders.”
Based on novels written by L.R. Wright, Murder in a Small Town follows a police chief named Karl (Rossif Sutherland) who — along with the help of others, including his girlfriend Cassandra (Kreuk) — investigates mysterious murders.
In the show’s newest episode, which aired on Tuesday, October 22, Cassandra was kidnapped by someone from Karl’s past named Gordon (Devon Sawa). Karl saved Cassandra just in time after a high-speed car chase but the encounter left her shaken. The last moments of the episode showed Cassandra asking to be alone on the way to the hospital before breaking down in tears in the back of the ambulance.
Kreuk previously opened up about how the show has managed to balance mystery with romance.
“It’s funny because I always feel like the title gives it all away. But it’s a murder mystery show. It’s a detective who is new to this small community, and he is basically confronting the fact that all of a sudden there are a whole bunch of murders,” she quipped to Us in September. “And he has to solve them. But it’s also set in a gorgeous setting because we shot in the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. It’s beautiful there. It’s on the ocean and there are trees and it’s gorgeous.”
She continued: “The other part of our show is that it’s a love story. It’s a love story between Cassandra and Karl. It is them trying to find their way and find something that’s lasting and meaningful.”
At the time, Kreuk admitted that she enjoyed having her character spending more time in the library instead of solving every case with Karl.
“We talked about it. I don’t know if she ever will. But currently her librarian skills are limited to the library, which is kind of nice,” she shared. “It’s not like we just all do the same thing together. There are multiple storylines and they weave together quite elegantly.”
Murder in a Small Town airs on Fox Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
