Mikel Arteta has committed his long-term future to Arsenal by agreeing a new contract, which will secure him to the Emirates Stadium until 2027.

Arteta’s previous deal was scheduled to expire at the end of this season — but both parties have moved to eliminate any uncertainty, with a three-year extension now in place.

The development will come as a significant boost to Arsenal ahead of Sunday’s trip to local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.

Arteta has been central to the club’s rise since he replaced Unai Emery as head coach in late 2019 and changed title to manager the following year.

He won the 2020 FA Cup and returned Arsenal to the Champions League in 2023 after a seven-year absence, thanks to finishing second in the Premier League behind only Manchester City.

Arteta’s side were runners-up to City again last campaign and have taken two wins and a draw from their opening three fixtures in 2024-25.

Their 100 per cent start was curtailed by Brighton & Hove Albion before the international break, when Declan Rice was sent off for a second caution.

Arsenal will also be without recent signing Mikel Merino, who damaged his shoulder in training, against Tottenham. Another summer recruit, Riccardo Calafiori, and captain Martin Odegaard suffered injuries while playing for their countries.

How Mikel Arteta rebuilt Arsenal in his own image

Arteta’s options were, however, enhanced on transfer deadline day by the arrival of Raheem Sterling and Arsenal will be buoyed further now there is clarity over the Spaniard’s own situation.

He previously put pen to paper in May 2022 and has subsequently established Arsenal as a vastly improved and competitive force, attracting admiring glances from the likes of Barcelona.

But Arteta — born in San Sebastian, a product of the Barcelona youth system and a former Arsenal captain — will take his tenure past half a decade.

In March, the 42-year-old registered his 100th Premier League win as a manager, reaching the mark 10 games faster than former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and only seven behind Sir Alex Ferguson. Pep Guardiola has the all-time record.

Having ended his on-field career at Arsenal in 2016, Arteta joined City under Guardiola and lifted two top-flight titles and one League Cup.
