Miami men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga is expected to step down — less than two years after leading the Hurricanes to their first Final Four, according to multiple reports. The Miami Herald was first to report the news.

Larrañaga, who turned 75 in October, began coaching in 1971 as an assistant at Davidson and compiled a 744-505 career record as a head coach at American International (1977-79), Bowling Green (1986-97), George Mason (1997-2011) and Miami since 2011.

He led George Mason to the Final Four in 2006 as a No. 11 seed and was named the Naismith College Coach of the Year in 2013, when he led the Hurricanes to their first ACC title.

Miami, though, has spiraled since its run to the Final Four in 2023. The Hurricanes dropped to 4-8 with a loss to Mount St. Mary’s last week and have lost 18 of their last 22 games. Miami ended the 2023 season with a 10-game losing skid. Larrañaga overhauled the roster with 10 new additions this offseason, but the team never got rolling.

Larrañaga is under contract through the 2026-27 season.

Miami is expected to make an announcement regarding Larrañaga later Thursday.
