Meghan Markle Made a Surprise Appearance with Prince Harry—& I Noticed Something Interesting About Her Outfit

Meghan Markle just made a surprise appearance alongside her husband, Prince Harry, and I can’t stop thinking about her red poppy brooch (which has a connection to the royal family).

This week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared in a video (see it here) that was shown at the Global Ministerial Conference on Violence Against Children in Colombia, where they discussed the importance of online restrictions for children. In a surprising move, the couple paid tribute to the royal family and their British connection by pinning poppy brooches to their lapels.

The red poppy brooches are in honor of Remembrance Day, which is an annual U.K. holiday that falls on November 11 and marks the end of World War I. The artificial flowers have been used since 1921 to commemorate military members who have died in war. Therefore, it’s tradition for members of the royal family to wear the symbolic flower for the entire month of November.

Prince Harry previously wore the poppy brooch earlier this month when he virtually attended a NATO meeting to discuss the Invictus Games. At the time, I was surprised that he sported the accessory because he isn’t a working royal and, therefore, isn’t expected to wear it. Although it was unexpected, Prince Harry has been trying to make amends with his family, so I understand why he chose to do it.

On the other hand, Markle didn’t leave London on the best terms with the royal family. So, she had every right to forgo the poppy tradition—but she didn’t. And it speaks volumes about her future relationship with the royal family.

Keep up the great work, you two.
