Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are injury doubts for Saturday’s Community Shield clash against Manchester City.

Maguire, 31, and Lindelof, 30, joined United’s pre-season tour in the United States but saw limited action. Maguire has been recovering from a calf injury that had sidelined him from England’s European Championship squad, while Lindelof was dealing with a minor knock.

Maguire played one half in matches against Real Betis and Arsenal but missed the defeat to Liverpool. Lindelof also played one half but in the games against Betis and Liverpool.

United have confirmed that both players are “doubts for Saturday’s game against City, although Erik ten Hag is expected to give an update on his side when he conducts his pre-match press conference on Thursday”.

Maguire recently described missing out on United’s FA Cup victory against City in May and England’s run to the European Championship final as “the toughest moment of my career”.

Ten Hag’s side, meanwhile, go into this weekend’s fixture at Wembley Stadium off the back of a mixed pre-season that saw United win two and lose three of their five pre-season matches.

Defence has been an area that United have been looking to strengthen this summer. They signed Leny Yoro from Lille in a deal worth up to €70million, but a foot injury sustained against Arsenal has seen him ruled out of action for up to three months.

The Athletic reported United submitted an opening double offer to sign defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, which was rejected by their German counterparts. Talks, however, are ongoing.
