Manchester City defender Nathan Ake was forced off in the Netherlands’ Nations League draw against Germany due to an apparent muscle injury.

The 29-year-old went down unchallenged in the 39th minute of the first half, with on-field treatment and a stretcher required to take him off the field.

Ake was pictured holding the back of his left leg in discomfort, and he was eventually replaced just before half-time by Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber.

Speaking at full time, Ronald Koeman said: “It looks like a muscle injury for Nathan, though I am not certain.”

Ake’s injury comes ahead of a busy run of fixtures for Manchester City, starting at home to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday. Pep Guardiola’s side then begin their Champions League campaign against Inter Milan on Wednesday, before travelling to Arsenal the following Sunday.

Despite playing just three minutes in City’s opening three Premier League matches this campaign, Ake has been a mainstay in Guardiola’s side over recent seasons, having made 44 appearances in all competitions in 2023-24.

Last season, Ake missed four games for his club due to a calf issue, but he has suffered several hamstring injuries since moving to the Etihad Stadium from Bournemouth in the summer of 2020.

Tuesday’s Nations League fixture between Netherlands and Germany finished in a 2-2 draw.
