The former beach house of the legendary Mae West, an iconic actress known for her sharp wit and memorable one-liners, is up for sale in LA.

Situated in the Rustic Canyon neighbourhood of Santa Monica, the property is listed just under US$6 million.

The Mediterranean-style house, built in the 1920s, boasts four bedrooms and four bathrooms across its expansive 315sq m, according to the Robb Report.

The white stucco exterior and terracotta roof reflect a classic aesthetic, while the home’s interior combines historic charm with modern updates.

Decorative tile work, colourful wallpaper, hardwood floors, arched doorways, and large picture windows contribute to the home’s unique character.

This property is one of several Los Angeles residences occupied by West, who passed away in 1980 at the age of 87.

The house was last sold for US$2.3 million in 2004 to John Sauter, a real estate investor, and his wife LeeAnn, a designer and entrepreneur.

After initially listing the home for US$8.3 million in late 2022, the Sauters have now reintroduced it to the market at a lower price and are also offering it for lease at $24,500 per month.

The nearly quarter-acre lot is secured by gates and high hedges, providing privacy and tranquility.

The home features a detached two-car garage and additional parking space for up to three vehicles.

The terraced grounds include mature trees, manicured gardens, and various outdoor lounging and entertaining areas, including a roof deck with a built-in hot tub.

Inside, the double front doors open to a wide foyer leading to a glamorous living room with a fireplace and French doors to the backyard.

The formal dining room features a floor-to-ceiling china cabinet, and the chef’s kitchen is equipped with a custom pot rack, high-end Viking appliances, an eat-in island, and a cozy breakfast nook with banquette seating.

Upstairs, the primary suite includes the original tiled fireplace, a boutique-style closet with display shelves, a wet bar, a Juliet balcony, and a light-filled sunroom that doubles as an office.

The luxurious bathroom offers dual vanities, a soaking tub, and a separate shower.

“Buyers will be buying a piece of history,” says Jonathan Mogharrabi, who shares the listing with Marci Kays of Carolwood Estates.

“It brings you right back to the 1920s with a vintage modern flair. We see the home likely going to someone who is creative and artistic, with a keen eye for design and style.”
