Flames ignited in Lucerne Valley and quickly blackened 200 acres of brush on Saturday, officials said.
The blaze, dubbed the Lucerne Fire, was first reported at 3:05 p.m. in the area of Highway 18 and High Road, according to San Bernardino County Fire Protection District logs and radio traffic.
It had scorched more than 200 acres as of 4:45 p.m., according to radio reports from the scene. Containment was listed at 0%.
Firefighting aircraft were summoned to join firefighters on the ground in the their efforts to control the blaze.
There were no initial reports of any injuries, structure damage or evacuation orders.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
